This memo and cover letter was received by Rex Bradford in August of
2002, after multiple inquiries regarding the discovery that one of the released
LBJ conversations had apparently been erased. The conversation in question took place between
President Johnson and FBI Director J. Edgar Hoover on the morning of November 23,
1963, less than 24 hours after the murder of President Kennedy. A transcript which
has survived the erasure contains the stunning revelation that Hoover and Johnson knew
that Lee Oswald had been impersonated in Mexico City prior to the assassination. See
The Fourteen Minute Gap on the History Matters website for more information, and
look in the November 1963 phone calls section of the History Matters Archive to view
the surviving transcript (LBJ-Hoover 11-23-63).
